Abdominal Massage for Constipation

Updated: May 14, 2021

If you are having constipation due to not feeling the urge to have a bowel movement this may help stimulate your body to move things along on the inside.

I use this technique on many patients who come to see me for constipation and it helps most of them! I try this on myself when I haven't gone in a few days and it helps.

Instructions:

1. Use a light pressure with your fingertips making small circles along the path of your colon.

2. Start on the inside of your right hip bone and travel up toward your ribs. When you get to the ribs continue massaging along the bottom of them across your abdomen to the right side. When you get to the right side travel down toward the inside of your left hip bone.

3. This can be done with one or two hands. In the demo I am only using one hand because I am holding the camera, but often I will do it with two hands together.

4. Make sure you always travel left to right, like an upside down "U".

Constipation has many causes. Some of it can be diet related. Make sure you are eating enough fiber and drinking enough water to help your system break down food and move it along.

Research states that normal bowel movements vary from 3x/week up to 3x/day for people. Everyone's body works at a different pace.

If you are feeling bloated, have chronic constipation or difficulty having bowel movements physical therapy may help. Give me a call or send me an email if you want to know if physical therapy can help you with this issue.
